Plus a few other bits purloined from other cars, to create that home-made armoured effect. We see a V10 in Wayne’s lair, but the vehicle itself uses a 650bhp Chevrolet V8. The purpose of the car, for me, was to be like a creature in a horror film. One of my other references was the Plymouth Fury in Stephen King’s Christine. It needed to be able to perform like a muscle car, but you can’t drive around in a Batmobile without being seen, so you’re only doing that when you’re doing something purpose-driven. It’s an amazing experience to get to make your own Batmobile. He continues: ‘James and I started talking to a bunch of amazing car people, including a guy called Ash Thorp who did some great work for us. I wanted the car to look somehow retro and familiar, like a Dodge Charger or Challenger, but also unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. I wanted him to be a gearhead in his garage, working on a kind of bashed-up kit car. We’d seen the Batmobile as a Gothic rocket, we’d seen it as a tank, and this was a Batman in year two who doesn’t have a Lucius Fox figure helping him. I was obsessed with it, had the little Corgi model. “My first Batmobile was the Lincoln Futura, from the ’60s television series. “Car culture is an important part of who and what Batman is,” he tells me.
